February’s Featured Brand: Meet Sunday Candle Co.

We carry so many wonderful brands here at Hawkins & Clover that we wanted our readers and customers to get to know them a little bit better. So, each month, we will do a Featured Brand on the blog so you can get to know the faces and stories behind some of your favorite brands!

SUNDAY CANDLE CO.

For those of you who have been in the shop, you know just how lovely the Sunday Candle Co. candles really are. For those of you who haven’t had the chance to smell them for yourselves, let us just tell you! Set in simple, white frosted jars, all candles are hand poured and clean burning for a perfectly elegant scent. With its hints of smoke vanilla, white cedar, crisp pine needles and warm spices, “El Sol” reminds us of those afternoons at the end of summer slowly turning into fall as the sun shines on our skin. “Hygge” lives up to its name as the hints of bergamot, tea leaves, salty citrus and sandalwood make us feel beyond cozy and safe – all we want to do is cuddle up and read a good book while this candle burns. The winter favorite “Facing West” gives us the best parts of fall and winter with notes of Douglas fir, spiced balsam, lemon peel and cedar wood. We get the warmth of spices and the freshness of the fir tree all wrapped into one perfect candle.

This month we chatted with Michelle, the brains and artist behind the sweet and simple Sunday Candle Co. candles, and had the chance to ask her about herself and her brand.

Q&A

H&C: Tell us your “Origin Story” – What made you who you are today & how does that translate into your business?

Michelle: I have always had a passion for candles and loved how they could set a certain mood or even bring you back to a certain memory. Growing up, my mom always had candles going. The two that I will never forget are Home Sweet Home + Apple Orchard by Yankee. Anyone else?  In 2018, I was determined to teach myself all of the tricks of candle making, but what I didn’t realize was that there were so many toxic products in big box candles. Most of the candles are filled with paraffin, a petroleum waste that releases carcinogenic soot as it burns, potentially causing respiratory issues and cancer. Yikes! I was pregnant at the time and I felt like toxic candles (hi, Target candles) needed to be a thing of the past.

H&C: What inspired your brand name?

Michelle: I had bad ‘Sunday Scaries’ working a corporate job and I am talking severe anxiety that would set in on Sunday morning. I remember sitting on my living room floor thinking about what I needed to do to change that. Sunday Candle Co has a deep meaning to me because it was essentially the thing that pushed me out of that corporate job and into my passion project, now turned FT job. I really want the candles to provide some joy + comfort to people. Now, Sundays have a whole new meaning to me.

H&C: What is one thing you would want people to know about your brand?

Michelle: We use 100% natural coconut wax, phthalate-free fragrance oils, and cotton core wicks to ensure a safe and clean burn. We do not use any additives such as paraffin, UV stabilizers, or color. Our scents are soft + work well for those that are sensitive to strong scents/candles.

H&C: What are you most proud of in your business and in your personal life?

Michelle: I am proud that we are a woman-owned business and growing at a fairly quick pace (thanks to our community + customers). We are making our way out of the small home studio and moving into a warehouse space to accommodate more orders. I am so excited for the future!

So, now you know!

Here at H&C, we love being able to support eco-friendly and women-owned businesses, especially when they make such amazing products! So, next time you’re browsing through the H&C website, or even if you’re in the shop, just remember Sunday Candle Co. and the benefits of buying small!
